A herding dog is not usually well suited to suburban backyard unless you give it lots exercise and attention. On the other hand there is no point getting a Chihuahua if you have an active lifestyle.

Here are some profiles of working type dog breeds to help you make your choice.

Labrador Retrievers

Labradors are naturally athletic, intelligent, high energy and need a lot of exercise and training. They are from the sporting group of dogs and were originally bred to retrieve – balls, sticks, birds.

If you leave your Labrador alone too long they tend to develop destructive behavior such as digging, chewing and continuous barking. A Labrador is a people dog and wants to be with its pack. They want to be inside with you when you are home.

If you do not have time to exercise your Labrador every day, and you don’t want your dog in the house, then may be a Labrador is the wrong dog breed for you.

A Labrador loves to play and roll in smelly stuff for extra perfume. While they have short coats they shed hair everywhere and love to sleep in your bed with you at night. These dogs are best suited to active families and individuals who will make their dog a part of their family. Labrador dogs tend to not grow out of their puppy stage until they are 2 years old and may not suit families with very young children. Not because they will intentionally harm anyone. It is just the exuberance of the Labrador dog may send everything in its path flying.

German Shepherds

German shepherds were bred to be guard dogs and are part of the herding dog group. German shepherds are fearless, german-shepherd-dog.jpgintelligent and loyal, and make wonderful family pets and excellent working dogs. German shepherd dogs are a large dog breed that needs lots of exercise and good size backyard to live in.

Buying a dog like this is not for someone who is shy and retiring. German shepherds need strong pack leaders and are a great dog for someone with an active lifestyle. German shepherds are also couch potatoes and love nothing more than being wherever their pack is at the end of a long day.

It is important that you be strong and assertive with your German shepherd or else they will end up bossing you around. Some obedience training and early socialization is also important for this wonderful dog breed.

Border Collies

Border collies are another dog breed from the herding group. These dogs have a strong herding instinct and will round up almost anything – even you. Border collies need to work and exercise every day. If they get bored they get into all sorts of trouble and, because they are master problem solvers, this can cause anything from incessant barking to escaping from the yard.

Border collies are not a good choice for families with children, as they may scare and nip at small children when they try to round them up. Border collies are incredibly smart. So, if you are going to get a dog from this breed you want to be smarter than them or you just may find yourself running after your border collie rather than the other way around.
