Training a Basset Hound Puppy
The basset hound puppy is a very congenial puppy, eager to please and eager to obey. Training a basset hound puppy requires first that your friend has respect for you. When you educate your puppy that equals respect and that in turn equals better behavior. The puppy usually believes in a pack order which is just like a ladder. The dogs are sociable animals who like to live with other sociable animals in a group or pack. Since the puppies believe in a social order of sorts it helps you to train a basset hound puppy without much difficulty.
The pack instinct is what separates dogs from cats. The pack instinct is why dogs wedge themselves into our families, rather than prowling along the fringes, like most cats. When a dog joins your family, even if your family is only yourself, a pack is formed. That is why when you bring in a basset hound you must start right away setting the rules. The reason being that with the pack instinct the puppy needs to be taught who will set the rules. Then he will be easier to train because he has a master and he knows he must obey. Training a basset hound puppy can be fun if you are willing to be firm but still show the puppy your love. We hope that now you understand about the dog’s social level and how to use that in your training process.
All of us think of our puppy as the perfect friend but remember friends are equals. A healthy relationship with your dog has to be a little bit different. The truth is you do need to be at the top of the ladder in order to keep your puppy obedient. Training a basset hound puppy is very important for the health and welfare of your puppy. You are like the parent to your puppy and must protect him and help him to grow into a mature dog. Just as all parents know at times you must do things that he is not going to like such as: give medicine that tastes awful, pull a sharp stick out of his teeth, and take him to the Vet for his shots. Puppy usually does not like anything like that but he trusts you enough to let you take care of him – don’t abuse that trust.
Training a basset hound puppy comes with daily routine being done over and over again. The puppy is a follower and a follower dog is a much happier puppy because they feel that you have everything under control and this makes them feel secure. They don’t have to figure out a complicated
world they just trust in you. They normally relax and enjoy life while you handle all the decisions.
When you train them to do what they should then they feel confident that they are obeying you and doing what you want. They know the behaviors that they will get praise, petting and rewards and they also know those things that they SHOULDN’T do to avoid scolding.
The dog that is educated is a happier dog, is a thinking dog and a more loving dog. Learning your dog words and what to do is almost like learning a foreign language. That is why you should use the same words for the same function. When you want your puppy to “sit” say “sit”, later do not change it to “sit down”, or “come on sit”. The puppy usually only understand the first two words spoken so you your self need to shorten your vocabulary for his understanding. The key to training a basset hound puppy is affection and language.
All of us who are dog lovers know how to show affection so that is a given.
The idea of using shorter words can take a bit of work. Think about what you want him to do and then think the shortest way to tell him. You want your puppy to bring you his rope toy for play. Do Not say come puppy bring me that rope toy and we will play together. The poor puppies lost you after do not and probably will just sit and look at you. It is better to say Rope Toy (pause) bring. Say it in that manner the puppy will catch on to what you want and what you want him to do. If you plan on house training set up a special area put a cage their with puppy pads and after each meal take him to that area and simply say “potty”. He will catch on and eventually go by himself. Food is easy because the puppy is always hungry. Simply keep the food in the same area and just say “eat”, puppy will follow you and eat. Training a basset hound puppy is just as simple as you make it or as hard as you want. In everything you need for puppy to do use the same wording and don’t forget to pet and praise!
